The State of Maine Bicentennial Time Capsule

The State of Maine Bicentennial Time Capsule is one of the Commission’s signature programs. The Dirigo Star, created by the Composites Laboratory at the University of Maine, will be placed on a Maine granite base with a Dirigo banner unfurled in front, all atop a Maine Heritage Timber custom-made cabinet. It will include items of interest related to Maine's 200 years of statehood, to be formally sealed in December of 2021 and installed at the Maine State Library.Maine Bicentennial Time Capsule

Thank you to all those who submitted ideas for items to include in the Maine Bicentennial Time Capsule. Our submission period closed Friday, Aug. 13, 2021.

The Commission is now reviewing the suggestions to present multiple items for Mainers to vote on in the fall of 2021 and those will become our “People’s Choice” items for inclusion in the time capsule.

Time Capsule Keepers will be enlisted to participate in the sealing ceremony in December 2021 and will agree to plan for additions to the capsule in future milestone statehood anniversaries, and ensure the capsule's public opening on Statehood Day 2120.

If you share Maine's birthday of March 15, you are invited to become a Time Capsule Keeper. Learn more in this Letter from our Chairman, Senator Bill Diamond and sign up by filling out this form. (You must print the form and fill it out by hand; parent/guardian signatures required for minors).
