On Tuesday July 30, Governor Janet T. Mills visited Presque Isle, Bangor, Portland and Augusta to raise the Bicentennial flag, dedicate Tri-Centennial pine groves, and announce programs and events for Maine’s 200th anniversary of Statehood.
Thousands of Mainers attended her whirlwind tour, which marked the 200th anniversary of theJuly, 1819 vote by residents of the District of Maine to separate from Massachusetts. This 1819 “return of votes cast” document (at right), held at the Maine State Archives, shows the official vote tally from each county. It was 17,091 in favor; 7,132 opposed.
