David Cheever Presents: Ready or Not — Statehood Comes to Maine
Throughout 2020, the Camden Public Library will be celebrating Maine’s Bicentennial with a series of dynamic programs that touch on the many facets of the state’s history. The first program of 2020 will be part of a winter series of Sunday afternoon talks co-hosted by the Camden-Rockport Historical Society.
As an introduction to the Bicentennial, David Cheever’s program will delve into the little known facts that influenced the formation of the State of Maine from before 1820 and leading up to the outbreak of the Civil War. Cheever is currently serving as Vice Chairman of the Maine Bicentennial Commission. He is a Deputy Secretary of State for Public Outreach and Civic Engagement, and recently completed his second six-year term as Maine State Archivist. His archival connection remains strong as he is a member of the Collections Committee of the United States Semiquincentennial Commission, the national organization preparing the 250th anniversary of the birth of the United States. Using the extensive collections of the Archives, he continues to speak throughout the state to schools and civic groups about the impact of the Civil War upon Maine, and Maine’s impact upon the Civil War.
