The Proprietors of Kennebec Valley: Were They Good Guys or Bad Guys?
Conservationist and amateur historian Jym St. Pierre will present “The Proprietors of the Kennebec Valley: Good Guys or Bad Guys?” St. Pierre resides in Brunswick where he is active in the Pjepscot Historical Society. His presentation will enlighten attendees about two 18th century competing groups of speculators from Massachusetts, who acquired vast land holdings along much of the Kennebec River valley, including Augusta and surrounding communities for 15 miles on either side of the Kennebec River. Known as the Kennebec and Pjepscot Proprietors they were mostly part of the British social, economic, and political elite. According to St. Pierre, they were devoted to God, king, country and self - often not in that order. The program will be followed by an intermission, then the announcement of Readfield Historical Society's 2020 Honoree, a brief business meeting and election of officers. Refreshments will be served. No Fee.
