As the second in the Eliot Historical Society’s Maine Bicentennial talks focusing on state and local history, noted author and Poet Laureate of Portsmouth, Tammi Truax, will share her research and the compelling story of Ona Judge Staines. The enslaved personal attendant of Martha Custis Washington, Ona successfully eluded the Washington’s efforts to recapture her, making her way to Portsmouth and later Greenland, NH. Learn about some of the area’s famous families who helped the Black Community defy the most powerful man in the country as she made her journey to freedom.
